Types of Linen Fabric

Lightweight linen is perfect for summer. The airy drape helps any garment move with the breeze, from summer dresses and light tops, to pool-side or beach-side swimsuit cover ups. You may sometimes see it referred to as tissue weight linen or linen gauze depending on the weave.

Midweight linen comes with a little more structure than its lightweight counterpart, making it a great choice for warm-weather pants, as well as dresses, robes, and suits.

Heavyweight linen is great for upholstery and home decor, but linens on the heavier side can also be used for sturdy bags, pants, jackets, and workwear.

Manufacturing Process of Linen Blends

Fiber Preparation
The fibers are cleaned and combed to remove impurities such as dirt. Also, short fibers should be removed too. The resulting fibers are uniform in length and thickness. Then comb them to align them neatly.

Blending/Yarning
Next, we need to blend the two materials. This step varies depending on the type of linen blend fabrics.
For some linen blend fabrics, two fibers are blended before spinning. Other times, we need to spin each fiber separately and then blend two types of yarns together.

Weaving
After the yarns are prepared, they are woven into blend fabrics. Different weaving techniques create linen blends with different looks and feels.

Pre-treatment
Before dyeing, it is necessary to remove the residual impurities on the linen blends, such as lignin, oil, color, etc. These impurities will affect the dyeing effect.
Fabrics containing more impurities need to be boiled in strong alkali. The temperature of strong alkali depends on the specific composition of the fabric.
Fabrics with higher linen content can be boiled at a higher temperature. If there's a higher content of the other material, then the fabric needs to be boiled at a lower temperature to avoid damage.

Polishing
Some types of linen blends, such as linen wool and linen cotton, may have more fluff on the surface. Therefore, it is necessary to remove those fuzzy fibers by bio-polishing to reduce the subsequent pilling.
Generally, bio-polishing uses cellulase enzyme for finishing, which has a good effect of surface smoothing with less fabric damage.

Dyeing
After pre-treatment, linen blend fabrics can be dyed. The type of dye used needs to match the type of linen blends, ensuring uniform and long-lasting color.

FAQ

Q: What is linen woven fabric?

A: Linen is best described a fabric that is made from very fine fibers, derived from the flax plant. These fibers are carefully extracted, spun into yarn, and then woven into long sheets of comfortable, durable fabric called linen fabric.

Q: What is a blended linen fabric?

A: Linen blended fabric refers to a type of linen which has the addition of a certain percentage of cotton. Unlike linen, which is harvested from stem fibres, cotton threads are produced by harvesting the boll (the protective casing that holds the seeds of the cotton plant).

Q: Does linen or linen blend wrinkle more?

A: But thanks to a few fabrication tweaks, today's linen-blend shirts wrinkle less than their 100% linen predecessors. This season, said Arnold, designers often favored fabrics that incorporated fibers such as silk, viscose and elastane to give crunchy linen a “softer” feel.

Q: Does linen blend shrink or stretch?

A: The answer is quite simple: linen does naturally shrink, but many linen fabric manufacturers use different methods to prevent this from happening by pre-shrinking or pre-softening process. Linen shrinks like any other fabric made with natural fibers – it can change its shape during an incorrect way of washing.
