Manufacturing Process

01/

Rib knit fabrics can be made from a variety of different fibers. Cotton is extremely common but you can also find rib knits made from polyester, bamboo, wool and a multitude of other substrates.

02/

Rib knit fabric is created by alternating knit and purl stitches. This is what gives the fabric its distinctive texture. The vertical lines in the fabric are created by knit stitches. The gaps between the lines are created by purl stitches.

03/

The number of knit and purl stitches determines the width of the lines. A rib knit with very fine ribs will be created with a 1×1 pattern (one knit stitch then one purl stitch, repeated). A rib knit with chunky ribs might be created with a 3x3 or 4x4 pattern. The type of yarn and stitch used will alter the weight and thickness of the rib knit.

04/

The process begins with the selection of yarns, typically made from cotton, wool, polyester, or blends. These yarns are then fed into a knitting machine equipped with two beds of needles. The magic happens when the machine alternates between the front and back needle beds, creating the characteristic ribbed pattern.
