In the textile industry, woven fabrics are the most common and widely used type of fabric. Whether it is clothing, home textiles, or industrial fabrics, woven fabrics occupy an extremely important position. As a supplier, understanding the definition and classification of woven fabrics will not only help you provide better professional advice to customers but also help you accurately position products and markets.

What is woven fabric?

Woven fabric refers to a fabric made by weaving warp yarns and weft yarns in a certain pattern through a loom. Warp yarns are generally arranged longitudinally, while weft yarns are interspersed horizontally. Through different interweaving methods, woven fabrics show a variety of textures and properties.

Basic weaving classification of woven fabrics
The weaving method of woven fabrics directly determines its texture, strength, and use. There are three main common basic weaving methods:

Plain weave: The warp yarns and weft yarns are interwoven alternately up and down, and the surface of the fabric is flat, strong, and wear-resistant. Plain weave fabrics have a tight feel and are often used in daily necessities such as shirts and sheets.

Twill weave: When warp or weft yarns are interwoven, diagonal lines are formed. The fabric is soft and elastic, and there are obvious diagonal stripes on the surface. Twill fabrics have good air permeability and are mostly used for trousers, workwear, and casual wear.

Satin weave: Warp or weft yarns float on the surface of the fabric in a certain proportion, forming a smooth and bright surface effect, with a soft and delicate feel. Satin fabrics are often used in dresses, underwear, and high-end home textiles.

Woven fabrics are classified by material
In addition to weaving, woven fabrics can also be classified according to the material of the yarn. Different materials give fabrics different functions and characteristics:

Cotton fabrics: natural fibers, good air permeability, comfortable feel, suitable for daily clothing and home textile products.

Linen fabrics: crisp texture, strong moisture absorption, suitable for summer clothing and decorative fabrics, but easy to wrinkle.

Polyester fabrics: chemical fibers, wear-resistant and durable, easy to wash and dry quickly, mostly used in sportswear and industrial fabrics.

Blended fabrics: Blended fabrics made of cotton and other fibers, such as polyester, which are both comfortable and durable, have a wide market demand.
